Signals as Vectors
Sampling turns a signal into a vector, a point in a high-dimensional space. The Fourier transform expresses that same point in a coordinate system built from sinusoidal basis vectors.
With a suitable basis, most of a signal’s information can be concentrated in just a few coordinates. The Fourier transform is particularly well suited to periodic signals. In the flute audio example, a few dominant frequency components are enough to reconstruct the signal almost exactly. These sparse representations offer many benefits including data compression.
